Patchwork
by Deborah-Zenha Adams
Patchwork [pach-wurk ] noun: something made up of a disparate pieces or partsSnips and scraps, bits and bobs, pieces and parts come together and are transformed by the skill of a textile artist into a quilt, a work that is greater than the sum of its parts. It may be viewed as warmth, art, comfort, purpose, thrift, history, family, a blessing, protection, or it may have meaning that can’t be condensed into words.
In this collection, Adams presents a sampler of her published poetry and prose carefully and mindfully stitched together to create a work that may be any or all of these things to the reader. Colors both contrasting and complementary, a variety of textures in tone and nuance, and the masterful juxtaposition of shapes and sounds combine to form a cohesive item that represents hope, contentment, fury, nostalgia, pride, longing, and wonder.
The words here may evoke beliefs, fears, traditions that sustain us or restrain us.
You may find connections you’d thought hidden forever or revelations you didn’t know you were waiting to receive. Each reader will find squares of memory or emotion that speak louder than others. What is universal in Patchwork is the whole of the thing, reminding us that we are not separate and alone; we are unique and united in our contribution to the power of the whole.
